The Góngora Theatre has hosted the opening ceremony of the 12th Cordoba African Film Festival, presented by the Spanish actress Susana Córdoba. A public interested to know the new cinematographic creations from the neighbour continent has occupied almost 500 cinema seats of this legendary theatre.

In the opening act of this current edition, the Festival director, Mane Cisneros, has mentioned the important role of the culture as the “main enemy of the any sort of extremism “ and has reminded that the cultural expressions are the best “weapons to fight this attack against freedom, the most precious asset of any person”. She has also pointed out that “it doesn’t exist here or there”, but “to listen to them is to understand ourselves. We need to understand that we are all on the same side. In favour of the culture and against the ignorance”.

During the event, the audience enjoyed the great performance of the dancer Aïda Colmenero, presenting the contemporary African dance workshop open to the registrations of both children and adult participants.

After doing a journey of the screenings and parallel activities that will take place during the Festival week in the Andalusian city, the organization thanked the essential support of sponsors and collaborators, as the Cordoba City Council, the Spanish Agency for International Development Agency, the Halal Institute, the Andalusian Junta and Casa Árabe, among others. With them, it has to be highlighted the support of the Moroccan bank Chaabi Bank, that has sponsored the subtitles of the opening film Adiós Carmen and the presence of its director at the Festival. The Chaabi Bank delegate, Bilal Ben Janan, has been in charge to announce this new collaboration in his intervention where he stated that “it is a big pleasure for Chaabi Bank collaborate with the FCAT and to be here” and noted the availability of the Bank Foundation to collaborate with these social and cultural projects.

Adiós Carmen has marked the beginning of the Festival, that has been presented by its director Mohamed Amin Benamraoui, showed his excitement to be the opening film of the Festival. “I am very grateful to FCAT to bring here my film as is the first time that will be projected in Spain”, said. He also mentioned the connection between Spain and Morocco reflected on the film. The director was also thrilled with the Fosforito presence. Fosforito is a cantaor, whose voice walked along the nostalgia of the main characters of Adiós Carmen, Spanish exiled during the last years of the Franco dictatorship. And in the event, he talked about flamenco: “the flamenco is living art where all the cultures converge, of course, also the Arab culture”.

The selection of this film to open a Festival that tries to build bridges between Spain and the African continent, is not a coincidence: the main character of Adiós Carmen is a Spanish young exiled in a small town in the North of Morocco. Carmen, performed by Paulina Gálvez, works in a cinema box office where she knows Amar, a ten years old boy, with whom she will have an special friendship. With this synopsis, the Cordoba African Film Festival, will start its twelfth edition remembering the shared history among Spain and Morocco.

The FCAT organization doesn’t want to forget those people that are no longer here. Last year some important figures of the African cinema production and spread, passed away. Specifically, the Festival wants to pay tribute to a friends and partners with the common objective to give visibility to African cinemas: Guido Huysmans, the artistic director of the Afrikan Film Festival of Leuven, the Cameroonian filmmaker Lorenzo Mbiahou and the also filmmaker, the Malian Bakary Diallo. With this tribute, the organization wants to remember the effort and the commitment of the cultural agents that, as the organizers of the Cordoba African Film Festival, fights every day to give voice to the African creative artists.
