A los 13 años huyó de una boda de conveniencia y anduvo días por el desierto antes de llegar a Mogadiscio, capital de Somalia. Allí, sus parientes la mandaron a trabajar como criada a la Embajada de su país en Londres, donde pasó la adolescencia sin saber leer ni escribir. Antes de volver a un país destrozado por la guerra, prefirió permanecer ilegalmente en Londres y trabajar de dependienta. Conoció a Marilyn y se hicieron amigas íntimas. Mientras trabajaba en un restaurante de comida rápida, fue descubierta por el famoso fotógrafo Terry Donaldson. Es el principio del cuento de hadas. Pero detrás de la fachada glamorosa de su nueva vida se esconde un destino desgarrador.

Née dans une famille de nomades éleveurs de chèvres, Waris Dirie fuit un mariage forcé alors qu’elle a 13 ans et entame une traversée du désert de plusieurs jours avant d’atteindre la capitale somali, Mogadiscio. Des parents l’envoient rapidement à Londres où elle travaille comme domestique à l’ambassade somalienne. Lorsqu’elle est menacée d’expulsion vers la Somalie alors en guerre, elle se retrouve à la rue et sans-papiers. Waris est alors repérée par le photographe à succès Terry Donaldson. C’est le début du conte de fée. Mais derrière la façade glamour de sa nouvelle vie se cache un destin déchirant…

Born into a family of goat-herding nomads, Waris Dirie fled forced marriage at 13 and crossed days of desert alone before reaching the Somali capital Mogadishu. Relatives soon shipped her off to London to work as a servant in the Somali embassy. When faced with the threat of returning to war-torn Somalia, Waris finds herself homeless and illegal. Waris is then discovered by star photographer Terry Donaldson. The fairy tail begins. But behind the glamorous façade of her new life lies a deeply heart-stirring fate…
