SINOPSIS

París, año 1817, Real Academia de Medicina: “Jamás hemos visto cabeza humana más parecida a la de un mono”, son las palabras del anatomista Georges Cuvier ante el molde del cuerpo de Saartjie Baartman. Siete años antes, Saartjie dejaba Sudáfrica con su amo Caezar, y exponía su cuerpo enjaulado al público londinense en las ferias de monstruos. Libre y esclavizada a la vez, la “venus hotentote” se convirtió en el icono de los bajos fondos para acabar sacrificada al espejismo de la prosperidad.

Paris, 1817, à l’Académie Royale de Médecine. « Je n’ai jamais vu de tête humaine plus semblable à celle des singes ». Face au moulage du corps de Saartjie Baartman, l’anatomiste Georges Cuvier est catégorique. Sept ans plus tôt, Saartjie quittait l’Afrique du Sud avec son maître, Caezar, et livrait son corps en pâture au public londonien visitant les foires aux monstres. Femme à la fois libre et entravée, elle était l’icône des bas-fonds, la « Vénus Hottentote » promise au mirage d’une ascension dorée.

Paris 1817, the Royal Academy of Medicine. “I have never seen a human head so similar to that of an ape’s”. Standing by a molded cast of Saartjie Baartman’s body, anatomist Georges Cuvier’s verdict is categorical. Seven years earlier, Saartjie left her native South Africa with her master, Caezar, to expose her caged body to the audiences of London’s freak shows. Free and enslaved all at the same time, the “Hottentot Venus” became an icon in the slums, destined to be sacrificed in the pursuit of a shimmering vision of prosperity.
